MARCH 16 - 18, 2018

Shared Visions Retreat Center

3717 Murphy School Rd, Durham, NC 27705

The Spring 2018 Durham Dance Tsunami weekend opens with a 2 hour Ecstatic Dance on FRIDAY evening followed by a 10 hour weekend workshop with K.J. Holmes on Saturday & Sunday. K.J. will be focusing on a combination of Contact and Solo Improvisation skill building. We will have open warm ups before the morning classes both days with live music and a Saturday evening Underscore facilitated by Toni Craige, also with live music. The Friday evening dance and Saturday evening Underscore are open to the community. The offerings will be appropriate for all levels.

The vision of the Durham Dance Tsunami is to offer our dance community an opportunity to spend a weekend learning together, build in new skills and practice with each other, and to enjoy a social space as a community.

Somatics, Improvisation and the Poetics of Dance

taught by K.J. Holmes

This workshop is experiential research of Body-Mind Centering ®, Ideokinesis, Contact Improvisation, and structures and scores for dancing.

Exploring anatomy and physiology to better understand the mechanics of movement, you will discover, explore, separate, integrate and improvise with physical systems and patterns to make visible physiological rhythms of support and creativity.  Through exposing contradictions in the body and engaging with our imaginations, we will widen choice, create discernment and practice embodiment and composition.

The course will bring forth skills, tools and practical experience of somatic studies and improvisation to become more tuned to physical centers and subtleties of touch, direction and intention and how to use these discoveries to tune the physical instrument of body and mind.  It will also bring forth sources for creative practice, be in it solo, duo or ensemble practices. and the poetics of expression through dancing, voicing, writing and reading.
