The Syntax of Touch, Perception and the Imagination through Contact Improvisation

with Chris Aiken & Angie Hauser

In this workshop we create containers for extended, focused practice of contact improvisation.  We seek to integrate physical skill with the development of presence and resilience, bridging the practical and poetic modes of being.  Classes will include specific movement exercises, perceptual tuning, somatic inquiry and creative research.  Our approach is  designed to create meaningful dancing and the emergence of community.

Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser began their collaboration in 2003, drawn together by their shared interest in the potential of dance improvisation.  Their performance work and teaching has been presented throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and in Europe.  Contact Improvisation is an important piece of their research.  Combined, Aiken and Hauser have collaborated with many of the leading figures in CI, including Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Andrew Harwood, Kirstie Simson, Peter Bingham, K.J. Holmes and Ray Chung.  Aiken and Hauser share a dance making practice that has yielded performance work that is deeply connected to their teaching. This work  centers around the art of collaboration—co-creating art through ethical and poetic action weaving together aesthetic principles, personal and shared histories, physical intelligence and ongoing efforts to create and understand the worlds they are a part of.  Their teaching is supported by extensive somatic research (including the Alexander Technique, myo-fascial bodywork, Body Mind Centering, ideokinesis and the gyrotonic training method) .  They are associate professors at Smith College and within the Five College Dance Department.
